Dear Friends,
Graduations. The one we shared together at Crater Stadium in 1960 and the ones we keep on having. There is a certain sameness or cadence that belongs to all of them.
There’s that roller coaster of emotions and feelings… beginning, celebrating, leaving, regretting, contemplating, recalibrating. The speaker reminding graduates that “there’s a big world waiting for you” and “this is not the end of your education; it is just the beginning!” True enough.
The “world that is waiting” for you and me is not so much about new jobs, more schooling, responsible parenting, larger homes, or stronger bodies. The world we are “graduating to” is more likely about trusted realities, new limitations, valued relationships, awkward accommodations, revised aspirations, and realistic expectations. Nonetheless, graduations!
Here are some quotes from several earlier “commencement speakers” for our new time and place:
- “I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With the Lord at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore, my heart is glad and my heart gives thanks and my body will rest secure.” (David) Psalm 16:8-9
- “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Moses) Deuteronomy 31:8
- “For I know the plans I have for you; plans to prosper you and not to harm you; plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
- “God will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in Him.” Isaiah 26:3
- “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you.” (Jesus) Matthew 6:33
His care for the graduation.
