Dear Friends,
It’s the birthplace of one of the most famous people in sports history… the rural village Gilmore, Ohio located just 30 minutes south of Dover, Ohio. His legacy in the world of baseball continues to be celebrated with many of his feats as a pitcher still unsurpassed.
It was a newsworthy day back in the early 1950’s when Denton “Cy” Young, along with several other Cleveland Indians, visited Dover to celebrate the inauguration of the Little League facilities. The extra bonus was the promise that baseballs would be autographed.
After a long wait in line, I handed over my freshly purchased baseball to the tall white haired elderly gentleman. He asked my name, then signed, “To Wynn, From Cy Young.”
I had no idea who had just signed my baseball.
Ignorance can have no shame. It wasn’t long before the prized baseball found its way into our neighborhood baseball games… dirt, grime and scuffs barely leaving a hint of the blue ink autograph or the person who had taken the time to visit our town and to be present with each of us that day. We had been around greatness that day… greatness that condescended to a bunch of Little League kids. But we had no comprehension of it.
You and I are around “condescended greatness” every day. God, the very essence of goodness and kindness and mercy, is in our presence every day. He is in the life of every person you meet, including you. Lord, give us hearts of wisdom to comprehend this great reality.
Have a great week… recognizing in Whose company you and I are in.
