God Says ‘Hi’

Dear Friends,

A twenty-eight hour roundtrip this past May with my teenage grandson introduced me to more hip-hop and rap and street wisdom than I knew existed.

A sampling of it came from the soul of rapper Kanye West. Here’s one of the lines from his album, Saint Pablo.

“But I feel so alone Like I don’t know anyone except the night sky above Yeah, you’re lookin’ at the church in the night sky Wonderin’ whether God’s gonna say hi.”

Have you ever been there with Kanye? It is a lonely place.

But it’s not just lonely. It’s also a sacred place where God speaks and where His “Hi” and His silence are an invitation for us to listen with ears, eyes, and heart.

Author John Piper writes, “every time the sun rises, or every time the stars come up, or every time the thunder rolls and the lightning strikes, every time there is a lavender, gold, yellow sunrise or sunset, God is gushing forth speech to you. And He means for you to hear it. And he means for you to be encouraged by it. He means for you to be helped by it.”

May this summer include a place where you are blessed by God’s “hi” and a whole lot more.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech…” Psalm 19:1-2
