Dear Friends,
The Williamson County Convenience Center… a sanitized name for the dump where I, along with a quarter million other county residents, take our trash. An unlikely place to find gratitude… unless you meet Rick, who oversees the Center.
Rick grew up in poverty in Detroit’s housing projects. He was shuttled between relatives and foster parents until he was old enough to join the Army. Rick fought in Operation Desert Storm and was honorably discharged after being wounded.
When I see Rick, it’s the same. “Hey man, isn’t this a great day? We are here in all this stuff. Tons of trash every day… cartons of old food, refrigerators, out of date toys, lumpy mattresses, books, suitcases, tables, chairs, carpets. You know, all kinds of stuff in abundance. It means we’re doing pretty well. And that makes me grateful. We are blessed.”
I see junk and Rick feels blessed.
Jeep Cherokee says about their product, “made for what you are made of.”
We too have been “made for what we are made of”… thanksgiving. No matter the seasons, the circumstances, even when surrounded by heaps of trash… we’ve been made to give thanks.
“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16
Enjoy Thanksgiving. You’ve been made for it.
