Heavy lifting is the cause of over one million workplace injuries each year – and that number likely triples if non-workplace injuries are included. The price tag? Over $55 billion dollars for personal injury lawyers!
‘Heavy lifting’ of a different kind comes to all of us: raising children, caring for elderly parents, living with broken relationships, unexpected illness, not enough money to pay the bills, etc.
We were never built to handle this kind of heavy lifting by ourselves. We were built for dependence.
Dependence. The Psalmist wrote: “Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up.” Psalm 71:20.
Dependence. Saint Augustine wrote: “You, O God, have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You”.
Dependence. It’s a gift each of us was given the moment we entered this world…it requires some courageous humility but that’s a lot less costly than $55 billion.
“You, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, the lifter of my head.” Psalm 3:3
