Identity Amnesia

Dear Friends,

“I still feel like a loser kid in high school, and I just have to pick myself up and tell myself that I’m a superstar every morning. I just wanna be a queen for them and sometimes I don’t feel like one.” Lady Gaga, backstage at New York’s Madison Square Garden.

The lyrics of her hits (Just Dance, Joanne, The Fame) echo the stories she is telling herself… “control your poison,” “Heaven’s not ready for you,” “All we care about is pornographic girls.”

Most of us never lamented our loss of “superstar status” or of being “queen of pop” but can relate to the feeling of not measuring up.

Our identity, whether as superstar or as classmates, is shaped by the identity that we give ourselves. Most of us, including Lady Gaga, have forgotten that our Creator God has given us a radical new identity. Author Paul Tripp calls this identity amnesia.

Identity amnesia makes you feel foolish when in fact you are in a relationship with the One who is wisdom. Identity amnesia makes you feel feeble when in fact you have been blessed with His strength. Identity amnesia makes you feel poor when in fact your Heavenly Father owns all things. Identity amnesia makes you feel unloved when in fact God in Christ gave his life for love of you. Identity amnesia makes you feel you do not measure up when in fact Christ has measured up on your behalf.

Summer is here. A good time to read good books and tell yourself good stories about Whose you really are.

His care,

~Wynn
