Mountains Leveled

Dear Friends,

On May 29, 1953, 70 years ago, the cover of ‘Life Magazine’ featured Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay standing on the summit of Mt Everest, the first to scale the tallest mountain in the world. Their story of courage, skill, and grit captured the imagination of the world.

Mountains hold a particular fascination for us. The immensity and grandeur of mountains can give rise to feelings of both ‘awe’ and of ‘awful’.

The image of ‘mountains’ occurs over 500 times in scripture. It is often used to bring attention to something that is ‘full of awe’…such as the Transfiguration of Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount, the Temptation of Jesus, the commissioning of the disciples, the Ten Commandments, a number of healings, etc.

Mountains in our lives. Events of significance…sometimes at the same time filled with both awfulness and awe. But always a place where God is more present for us than ever. It’s where the majesty and mystery of God are at work and the mountains are leveled.

I will go before you and level the mountains.” Isaiah 45:2

That’s a promise that comes with His care for you today.
