Taste and See

by | Aug 1, 2020

Dear Friends,

There’s nothing like the feel of warm sand on your feet or the fragrance of air following a spring rain. The crashing sound of Niagara Falls is unforgettable, and the sight of a newborn child stirs wonderment.

Then there is always the taste of chocolate.

The five basic senses we learned in kindergarten (touch, smell, hearing, sight, taste) help us make sense and meaning of what we are experiencing. It wouldn’t be much of a play or a concert or sporting event without sight or sound. Not much of a hug without touch, not much of a perfume without smell. Not much of a meal without taste.

Interestingly, there are five basic tastes that the tongue is sensitive to: salty, sweet, bitter, sour, and umami, the taste of MSG. Tasting something opens up a whole new realm of all the other senses. Venture a “taste” of Italy and our other senses are sure to be stimulated. Venture “tasting” a new relationship and our other senses come alive in ways we had not previously experienced. Venture the “taste” of a new job or location and our other senses kick in.

The writer of the Psalms wrote “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed are those who take refuge in Him.” Psalm 34:8.

Venture the invitation to taste; it’s not much of a life without tasting.

Enjoy this day,
