True Augustus

by | Aug 1, 2018

Dear Friends,

Where did the name for this hot month come from? The first Emperor of the Roman Empire, Caesar, saw himself as “great, majestic, and supreme” (synonyms for “august”), so he named the eighth month after himself, Caesar Augustus!

Not surprisingly Caesar Augustus was known more for his egotism than for his character. He is quoted as saying, “young men, hear this old man to whom old men hearkened when he was young.” It was Caesar Augustus who exiled both his only daughter and granddaughter and sent his military into battle while he went into hiding. Hardly a reflection of his title.

Today, all we see of ancient Rome is ruins. Caesar’s mighty legions and the pomp of Roman imperial power have faded into oblivion.

There is another life after whom…

  • More books have been written about than any other person in history.
  • Nations have used his words as the bedrock of their governments. According to Durant, “The triumph of Christ was the beginning of democracy.”
  • His teaching known as “The Sermon on the Mount” established a new paradigm in ethics and morals.
  • Hospitals, humanitarian works and universities have been founded… including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Columbia, and Oxford.
  • The role of women in Western culture traces its roots.
  • His teaching on the value of every human life led to the abolishment of slavery in Britain and America.

One an egocentric emperor who conquers, rules and destroys and carries the title of Augustus… The other, God in human form, who lives out his identity as Shepherd, Servant, Savior and gives life, meaning, and hope for all of life and all eternity.

Enjoy this August!
