Unselfing Wonder

by | Aug 1, 2023

Dear Friends,

The Harvard Business Review, August 2021 carried an article “Why You Need to Protect Your Sense of Wonder”. One experimental group, when asked to draw pictures of themselves, literally drew themselves smaller in size after having an experience of ‘wonder’. Such an effect has been termed “unselfing”.

The article goes on to say, “This shift has big benefits: As you tap into something larger and your sense of self shrinks, so too do your mental chatter and your worries. At the same time, your desire to connect with and help others increases.”

Scientists, poets, philosophers, romantics, all of us have wondered about ‘wonder’.

Einstein said “the most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.”

Socrates said, “wonder is the beginning of wisdom.”

Frederick Buechner said, “never question the truth of what you fail to understand, for the world is filled with wonders.”

The whole earth is filled with awe at your wonders….” Psalm 65:8

So, if you’re wondering today about some of the wonders that are all about us, it’s likely a good thing.

His care and wonders for you.
